Shrine of St. Anthony
Feast day: June 13
St. Anthony
St Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church
Prayer to St Anthony
O holy St Anthony,
gentlest of saints,
your love for God and charity for your neighbour
made you worthy when on earth
to possess miraculous powers.
Miracles waited on your word,
which you were ever ready to speak
for those in trouble or anxiety.
Encouraged by this thought
I implore of you to obtain for me my request
(here mention your request)
The answer to my prayer may require a miracle;
even so you are the saint of miracles.
O gentle and loving St Anthony,
whose heart was ever full of human sympathy,
intercede for me
and the gratitude of my heart will be ever yours.
Amen.
June 13 is the memorial of St Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church. Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195.
He first joined the Augustinian Canons Regular but later left to become a Friar Minor of St Francis. He was known to his contemporaries as “The Hammer of Heretics” for his dedicated preaching of the true faith. He has a reputation for retrieving lost objects of careless people.
He died in 1231 and was canonized a year later in 1232, and was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1947.
